I have a yamaha 115 that has an oil issue. When running the motor through the RPM range the oil cap on the main reservoir will pop up and leak oil. I have tried clamping it down but then the engine wouldnt run over 2000 rpm and smoked liked crazy. All the wiring looks correct. I had the key in the on position while in the driveway and it actually pumped oil into the engine while not running. Not sure if this the sensor unit is messed up. It seems to continually pump oil into the reservoir when the key is on. The reservoir is always full. Anyone else have this problem or know if i need to replace the oil sensor. Any help would be appreciated.

Test your oil level sensor on the engine mounted tank. It's actually pretty easy...

Take an ohm meter and run the magnet up and down the shaft of the sensor, making sure it reads in all 3 places.

Be sure you get the little foam ring that goes on the bottom of the screen surrounding the sensor out when you pull the sensor out!

Re: Oil Cap on Yamaha 115 Wont stay down

I pulled the sensor, turned on the power and as the float moved up and down the warning light would change from green to yellow then red as the float bottomed out. I noticed that as the float was all the way to the top the oil did not fill. It seems that the float is sticking or no longer working. Do i need to replace the whole unit or can i get a float. Does anyone know the best place, i live in Raleigh, NC and there are no boat stores that have the oil sensor part. Any good online stores that have great deals.

I think these guys are good. http://www.simyamaha.com/
I've ordered a couple times from them and shiping was fast and prices reasonable.

Re: Oil Cap on Yamaha 115 Wont stay down

Alright i played around with the oil sensor some more today. It seems that the float is actually moving all the way up and down with no problem. I drained some of the oil out of the reservoir and then put the float all the way up in the full position. I turned the key to the power position and just watched. With the motor not running, just the power on, the oil reservoir tank slowly filled up from the reserve tank. Im new to these motors but i dont think that the oil should be pumping if the sensor is reading full. Does this mean that the sensor could be bad because all the wiring seems dead on. The old owner said that the cap has been doing the same thing to him for the past couple years. Just want to try and fix this problem so that i dont leak oil into the water and have to constantly fill the tank. Been on the lake three times with this boat and have gone through 2 gallons of oil. Any thoughts.
