Oil Change Kit

I have a 1995 4.3L Mercruiser and am considering putting on an oil change kit to make future oil changes much easier. I see that Merc puts one out, however, it is quite expensive. I was wondering if anyone else has installed one or knows of another brand of kit. It is the type with the hose that attaches to the drain plus and allows you to drain the oil thru the bilge drain.

Thanks

Re: Oil Change Kit

Yes, I would highly recommend it. It makes my oil a breeze to change. Just make sure you warm your engine first so the oil will flow better.

Re: Oil Change Kit

Overtons.com has them for less than $20. Do a search on "oil drain kit". I bought one of them and they work great, although installation was a pain since it was so hard to reach my oil pan plug, but now that it's installed I hope I never have to deal with it again.

Re: Oil Change Kit

bugup,I had one on my previous boat and I gotta tell you it was the best!!!!I got the kit and it was called Kwik-drain.About $100 for the motorized pump and fitting.I would do an oil change in less than 10 minutes.Warmed the engine up,put the output hose in a container and held the on button on the pump for about 2-3 minutes and that was it.Connects right to the battery.I eventually found a way to keep the button down so I could take off the oil filter while it was pumping out.I think I still have the papers from it if you want me to fax them to you.It is a good investment in your boat.Charlie

Re: Oil Change Kit

Just got one from Overtons and was not too pleased when I tried to install. Not sure if they didn't send me the right part or what because I've not rechecked the order just yet, but the adapter piece that goes into the oil pan was WAY too large. We tried to jut put the hose into the pan (the original plug did fit the adapter that did not fit the pan)but could not get it to thread... Will be checking with Overtons tomorrow regarding this order.

Bondo,I used to do an oil change while having a conversation with friends and having a beer.I was showing off of course making it look even easier than it was.I miss that boat!!! Single 5.7 with enough room in the engine compartment to sit on either side of the motor with the manifold at about chest level.I have twins now and havent found a midget for hire to get to my oil pans yet. I have an 5.7 OMC (1983). I swear there is no drain plug on the thing. Am I wrong? Could it be on the back side of the pan?

Re: Oil Change Kit

Question about these kits. What safeguard measures are there that this hose, that I assume would have to remain connected, does not come lose or open or whatever, and you start dumping oil?

Re: Oil Change Kit

Good question. On the hose kit I installed there does not seem to be anything that would act as a safeguard against those things. I was very sure to tighten everything up really good when I did the install last year and I plan on checking and re-tightening everything again sometime this year.

Re: Oil Change Kit

The fitting goes on just like a drain plug.
it wont loosen.Hose clamps to the fitting on one end and clamps to the pump on the other end.The hose goes upward to the pump.Gravity and a locking pump wont let anything happen.Even the pump has a knob to turn when discharging old oil with a spring loaded button that has to be held down to work.Leak with this system....not a chance.Charlie

Re: Oil Change Kit

I Fail to see the Need for any Safety Systems.........

Properly Installed,......Nothing Short of a Hammer is going to make it Leak.............
There's No Pressure,........ Just Gravity.....

Mine is a Self-Engineered System,... Of Course.......
My pan fitting goes from the 1/2"fine thread at the pan to 3/8ths" pipe,... Then a built to size 3/8ths" Hydraulic Hose, 3/8ths" pipe threads on both ends,...... to a Pipe Cap....
The hose is long enough to either go out the bilge drain,.. Or to reach up beside the engine......
The Pump is the Key to the system.....

Ayuh,....Charlie, When I rebuild this barge, Mechanic Access was Priority 1......... I can reach Every Bolt on My Barge....... :D

My Oil Filter is in the stock position,... Plain as Day when the cover is pulled....Same with the fuel filter......
