Re: oil change lower unit

The bottle with say "Lower Unit Oil", at least the bottle I bought yesterday did. It's 80W something. If you are in a marine store I am sure they will have brands (like Quicksilver) that will specifically say it is for the lower unit.

Some brands will have a special tip on the bottle. Almost like the end of some caulk or glue. The tip will also have threads that will allow the bottle to be screwed into the drain hole for the lower unit. The "pump" then is your hands squeezing that bottle.

Another option is a plunger pump with a hose that will screw onto the bottles that "normal" oil comes in. That one, you just keep pushing down on the plunger until the drive is full. The 2nd type I think is easier. The first type is cheaper (no pump to buy)l

The pump is about 6 bucks at Walmart.....well worth it.
Make sure to use new o-ring gaskets on the drain and fill plugs.
They are designed to be a one use only gasket.
Any dealer will have them for about 80 cents each.
Mercruiser uses the blue gaskets....

yep, well worth it. don't know about walmart though... not my store to shop in.... ;) i bought two pumps even. made one into a pressure tester...

another for sure, do that. also, be sure the old gasket is removed. they (the old gasket) like to stay with the drive when ya remove the screw and have to be peeled out of the recess they sit in. 2 gaskets will likely leak..
