Oil change pump?

My Par, (sub-par?), hand oil change pump is leaking at both ends of the cylinder. I took it apart and it appears that the endcaps just seal, (or don't, in my case) on the cylinder flanges. It has always had some leakage, so I guess maybe it is time for a new, different brand, oil change pump. This is for an OMC, 5 liter HO Ford engine in a 1993 Chris Craft with the garden hose type of fitting on the dipstick tube. I have seen Attwood, Handi-Mate, Jabsco, and Sea-Dog. One thing that bothers me is the fact that it appears Par is made by Jabsco. In fact most all of the pumps look quite similar. I would rather try something different this time, but that may not be possible. What do most of you people recommend?

Charles

There is a four-foot pressurized hose you can purchase from Overton's or other boat supply catalogs. It has a fitting on one end with an elbow which replaces your engine oil pan drain plug. Other end of the hose has a brass cap. Once you get it hooked up, you leave the hose laying in the bilge. When ready to change oil, warm up the motor, run the hose out your bilge drain hole, pop the cap and drain into a bucket. I've changed mine twice this season with no problems yet, and no mess in the bilge.

ddb:
Thanks for the reply.
I have seen those at various auto supply stores, but since my boat is on a lift all season, it might be just a little unhandy to get the old oil captured. One thing I did like about that system when compared to the pump is the fact that you would do a better job of getting everything out of the crankcase.
The pump works OK, except for the leakage. That problem is a quality problem not a system problem. Hopefully, one of the other brands might be made a little better.

Charles :)

Here a vote for the Jabsco Port-a-Quick. I have one an use it all the time on my boat and my cars. It is the one used by many of the Marine mechanics around here. You can also go to West Marine and read what other people have to say about it through their customer ratings system. It rates highly there. I paid $125 for mine and it was worth every penny.

I have a reliable motor in my Panasonic battery drill. I bought the Jabsco drill pump. It works well. Don't remember what I paid for it, 30 or 40 bucks maybe.

Charles----servicing on a lift is a challenge. I have seen people rig a walkway to get around the stern when on a lift. How do you change the drive gear oil? Personally, I am more concerned about checking the condition of the gear lube. I do mine at the same time as the motor oil, religiously, every 40 hours.

ddb:
All I do on the lift is change oil. The boat comes out, (and is out now), each fall for servicing and winterizing.
I have no idea how you would even change the gear oil, let alone lube the u-joints with the boat not on a trailer.
I change the oil & filter just before I take the boat out for the season. One hint or tip, I go out and get the oil warmed up by forcing myself to run around the lake. I then pump the old oil into some mt milk jugs. Now, I pour in the new oil and go have a Pepsi and let things cool off. When I come back, I can change the filter without having to fight with hot oil. Much easier.

Charles :)

Charlesw
I had the same problem with my hand pump.Is it leaking around where the rubber goes over the tube or the pump shaft itself?
Here what I did because I'm cheap
If yours has those crimped bands around it.Take them off with cutting pliers and put stainless hose clamps on,just tighten enough to stop the leak.
Worked like a charm on mine

Rich

Wellcraft 89:
Thanks!
You have just saved me several dollars. The leak is where the rubber caps go over the tube. No clamps were ever on mine, but there will be in a very short time. Sure looks like that should do the job.
I like cheap! :D

Charles

Re: Oil change pump?

Two #20 Hose clamps and I think I am back in business.
I really hate to admit that the clamps never even entered my mind. Had to make it too difficult, I guess.
Thanks for everyone's advice and suggestions.

Charles
