Re: Oil Change???

All of your questions (and much more) should be answered in the manual - the one you asked Don about.

You should spend the $30 on a cheap manual. They aren't the greatest for in-depth mechanical work, but they cover all the basics.

SAE 30 is the standard oil for most basic merc's and omc's.

I personally use automotive filters routinely, but there are those that prefer strictly marine.
I wouldn't use fram - they're among the worst quality available. The super-tech's at wal-mart are decent and probably the cheapest you'll find.

I believe a 5.0 holds 5 qts - again, you should pick up a manual.

Re: Oil Change???

Thanks guys. I plan get a manual this weekend. The link Don S gave me was great other than he said I should use manual 15 and go figure, there is no 15 listed.

Thanks for all your help. So far I have changed the plugs, wires and D cap. Plan on changing the oil and water seperator soon and testing on the water next week.

Can anyone cross reference my oil filter to an AC or other filter?

I changed the outdrive oil at the begining of last year then never got the boat in the water, should I change it again?

Re: Oil Change???

If you will post the what filter you have now, someone can cross reference it for you. I also use automotive oil filters, I do not buy a marine specific one.

I disagree with rob935 though, you should change the oil in your outdrive. It is just like regular motor oil, either change it every xxx hours or every xxx months. It breaks down while sitting there.

I prefer 20W50 multigrade oil. It has much better heat protection than a straight sae30. Those engines get hot in the summer and under the covers.

I would only use muligrade if it's a full synthetic.
