I just have a general maintenance question. I just bought a Formula with a 5.7 (260hp) MerCruiser. The yard has done some maintance (replaced some stern drive seals, water pump etc) and done a tune up that included an oil change. The engine has 271 hours one it (its a 1985). How ofted does this set up require oil changes? Thanks.

At least twice a year. It depends on how often you use the boat.

Actualy the Merc manual calls for every 100 hours or annually, whichever occurs first.

Well its a 350 Chevy and you will get 350 opinions.
If you run it hard, a lot of wide open use I would change every 50 hours, if its a mix then every 100. :)

How did you find this boat, a Formula that has only been used an average of 13.55 hours per year.
This is amazing.

Thanks for the information everyone. Hey, cclancer, I found the 1985 Formula 242 LS in Osage Beach MO. It was owned by an 86 year old guy who lived in Chicago and used the boat in the summers infrequently. In fact, the last registration was done in 2001. So yes, 13 hours a year. Not bad! The boat was quite dirty but has cleane up nicely. I get alot of stares which is nice. Cheers.

Congratulations,
Sometimes you have to travel to find the deals.
Nothing better than finding a 20 year old "New" boat.

I have that same motor in my 18' Baja. You'll find that it's a good motor and pretty easy to work on.

I do my oil changes once a year when I winterize. I've got Mobil 1 synthetic in it.

I have a used "new" boat.....nice ain't it? Kind of rare too I'd imagine.
