Okay, here is an interesting question for all of us that have toys (atv's,snow machines, etc).

I have an atv with a screw in dipstick. The dipstick is short and the methods vary. Do you screw in the dipstick to check or just have the cap touch the threads (without screwing it back in - which is my method).

Bob

Re: Oil Check Question

Don't honestly know which is correct. Good question, Bob.

I have always screwed in the dipstick to test the level.

Re: Oil Check Question

I usually look at the diagram by/on the dipstick. My Honda Lawnmower specifically shows the dipstick cap screwed off and resting on the threads. My Arrens snowblower (a techumsa engine) shows the dipstick screwed in.

A thought here... add the amount of oil specified in the manual. For example, my Briggs and Stratton 12 hp with the extended tube runs 48 oz. of oil. Then see what works for measuring the amount in the crankcase.

good luck,
fp

My Honda ATV manual says to check it with it screwed all the way in.

It has been my experience that any dipstick or level indicator has to be fully seated or screwed in. I have never seen any engine that isn't this way, and I have been around a lot of engines.

My new Honda pressure washer is a just touch threads, as the older Honda 5 horse kicker I own, but thats it...rest as JasonJ says

Re: Oil Check Question

It depends on the engine. You have to check the manual. There is no 'right' way across the board. Some engines react badly to an overfill, usually more destructive than an underfill due to aeration in the oil. Be careful!

Re: Oil Check Question

Thanks for all the input. Looks like there is not a standard way.

Well FYI on my Suzuki ATV I just have to touch the threads (as per the manual). I wish they would go back to the oil windows on smaller engines.

Bob
