I have a new 60 4 stroke Yamaha on the way. In Trailer Boat magazine, and Bass an Walleye, Yamaha oil came out the worst in rust prevention. How about the best rated oil, BMC's oil to use in the new motor. [Would I have to buy it wearing a disguise? ] Any good idea's on the subject. Nevjb

You'll get more ideas than you want, asking about oil.

Standby for a war. :D

The manufacturer (in this case Yamaha) has a vested interest in your satisfaction.

It has always been my policy to use what they recommend. However, I always half their interval for oil change.

Foriegn engine manufacturers are quick to deny warranty without proof of using their products.

A word of caution, KEEP RECIEPTS!

Check out the FAQ section at the top of the page, you can read it at your leisure and not feel as though you've gone 3 rounds with Mike Tyson.

IMO, whatever the manufacturer says, especially with a new motor.

Aldo

nevjb
You live in Reno where 7" of rain a year is a rainy year. You couldn't get your motor to rust if you wanted to...use the Yamalube...at least till it's out of warranty...just my humble opinion :)

The FAQ has little info on four strokes:

Follow chief 101s and DJs advice, at least until after warranty. You can use any oil that meets there rating, but if you have trouble, be prepared for a fight. Its not right, but unfortunatly, thats the way it is.

Re: oil choice

Nevjb,

Was that report on yamaha oil synthetic or petroleum oil?

I have a 1996 50hp 4 stroke mariner that is supposed to be made by yamaha. Since new I've run merc quicksilver (non synthetic). An extended hospital stay kept me from running it and it sat approx 3 months without use. After that, the valve train started showing rust color on the parts...no pits but rust was starting to happen. The motor was only 2 yrs old with 300 hrs and I was pixxed. The same treatment on my 2 strokes has never caused rust on the cyls or anything else so I learned to treat 4 strokes differently.

I took the oil fill cap off while the motor was idling on the muffs to see how much oil was flying around inside the valve assy. There is very little misting or oil hitting all the parts at 650 rpms. Lesson learned, run it more often and run it faster while flushing. That was a couple years ago and it hasn't gotten worse. I changed to 25-40w quicksilver too.

Is this true for foreign products sold/used in the U.S.? I thought US law prohibited any manufacturer from requiring use of their brand of oil - they could require a spec (EG TCW3, and could recommend a certain brand, but could not require use of the brand. I'm just wondering if anyone has actually been denied warranty claim on this basis.

I certainly agree that at a minimum, one should use the type of oil specified, maybe even the brand recommended, and of course keep receipts.

No, they cant specify you use there oil, or they would have to give it to you. They can make your life He*l though while under warrantee though if you do not. Make ya fight it out in court. If they know you are not using there oil, automatically any problem is oil related whether it is or not.

Re: oil choice

Thank you all. I'm going to use the Yamaha oil. No use in complicating any problems with the motor. Until you are better paid. nevjb
