A local store where we shop has the Johnson/Evinrude XD25 for $12.50/gallon and Pennzoil Marine Premium Plus for $10.00/gallon. Is the XD-25 worth the extra amount? If there is any advantage at all, I will go with the XD25. I see that Nissan and Tohatsu have only seven oils recommended for use with their TLDI outboards, one of which is the Pennzoil. Any comments from actual users are especially appreciated.

Hello.
Pennzoil is great stuff and never caused me any trouble. It is also for sale at Walmart and Kmart under its own name and under the store brand name.I think it is cheaper that way.

I'm with ROLMOPS

I've been using Penzoil Marine Blended Premium Synthetic. I've had less plug fouling and better performance.

I'm pretty sure that Penzoil is owned by Shell.

If you want to check the specs on the oil: web page

Hi, Dartman.

What engine are you using?

DFI engines have much more severe requirements than carbed or EFI engines. An example is the TLDI Tohatsus that you mention.

For DFI engines use ONLY the oil or oils specified in the warranty. There are a lot of blown up Ficht engines that were caused by using TCW-3 oil rather than Ficht RAM oil.

Good luck. :)

Not to hi-jack the thread, but where can you buy E/J XD-25 for $12.50 a gallon?

Charles

:(
Our Wal*Marts carry their private label and Pennzoil synthetic blend, but no J/E products.
Oh well.

Thanks,
Charles :)

Re: Oil Choice

Ask the department manager if they can order the XD25, I would think any Wal-Mart can get it.

Re: Oil Choice

It is very simple. Run the Johnson/Evinrude oil in a Johnson or Evinrude. Why try to second guess the engine manufacture? They spend big bucks on oil research and know more than 99.99% of any private boat owner.

For every J&E motor that rus great on "non" J&E oil there are 1000s that run great WITH J&E oil. That argument favors the Johnson/Evinrude oil every time.

BUT...if the engine is old and been running on regular OB pet oil I wouldn't change to synthetic. Johnson/Evinrude pet oil is available too.

Re: Oil Choice

Not to knock J&E labeled oils, Bill, but your logic is skewed.

Read the warranty on J&E engines. Except for the DFI and 4 stroke engines, they specify TCW-3 oil, period. If there was ANY danger of reduced performance or risk of engine damage from using the Wal Mart labeled (SuperTech) Pennzoil they wouldn't do that.

Re: Oil Choice

JB, I hear ya but my logic is not skewed or in regard to warranties or TWC-3. You are reading too much into it. It is answering the question of which I think is best of the two oils mentioned for a Johnson 150 engine. I didn't even hint of other TWC oils hurting the engine, voiding a warranty, suggest they would or suggest they didn't meet the eng mfgs minimum oil spec. My simple logic is the engine mfgs blend of oil is certain to be ok, regardless of the generic TCW-3 disclaimer printed in the owner's manual, period. The reason they don't say you must use their brand oil is because a law prevents mfgs from making you use a particular brand.

Besides, I won't assume that all TCW oils are blended exactly the same but will assume they meet the minimum J&E specs (TCW). I need someone to show me proof of other TCW oils meeting or exceeding the J&E oil specs. I don't mean TCW specs, I mean J&E oil component/additive specs. I will change my mind if someone can provide proof beyond advertising hype and hearsay. No, it doesn't mean I'm right but nobody has yet to prove their "other" TCW oil is better either. I'm just playing it safe and am comfortable by using the engine mfgs oil. I have plenty (7000-9000) of ob motor hrs to make me think I'm on the right track too.

Over the years I've tried everything and settled on Penzoil as the best for my machine.
No problems thus far.
Ross
