oil dipstick hitting something

Okay... next problem.... I just replaced my carb and the engine and boat run sweet... But I noticed at first the engine was making a wierd noise.... The oil dip stick is very hard to guide down to the engine. I am the second owner (at least) and the PO replaced the engine with a jasper 305 back in 1997. The oild dipstick tube looks like it was "made to fit" it is mushed in between the engine and the manifold. the dipstick handle is jammed right up against the manifold when it is all the way in. When you push the dip stick in you always felt like you were hitting something but after jiggling a bit it goes in. I took the dip stick out and started it up and it runs great sans dipstick. Dip stick back in noise reappears.
Any suggestions on whats going on and what I can do?
It is a merc 305 (jasper rebuilt) in 1997 and a rochester 4 bbl. early prealpha out drive.
Thanks again for any help

That is one of the problems with after market engines. Nothing fits EXACTLY.
Sounds like your dipstick is way too long and is curling up and the crankshaft is hitting it. If that is the case, it can't possibly be reading correctly.
The Mercruiser dipstick and tube was attached to the bottom of the oil pan and went to the front of the engine. Really hard to say what your setup is now.

What Don S said.

Not knowing what year engine block and oil pan was used could hamper a proper repair.

If you remove the oil pan drain plug and determin if it's standard or metric threads, this will aid in being able to install the correct dipstick tube and stick. If it's metric you should be able to go to a local dealer and have them get you a dipstick tube, dipstick, adapter fitting and new bolt to install the adapter fitting on the oilpan drain hole.

Here is a pic of one on a Volvo Penta, but the Mercruiser would be very simular.
