I'm reading reviews on many of the inexpensive oil drain pumps with them only working once, or not at all. I am trying to find something in town, if possible as I'm going out on the lake Saturday morning. Are these $20 pumps basically you get what you pay for. Such as this one from iboats, or would any old pump do the trick. I would like to have something that would last me at least a couple seasons, but not break the bank with these $100+ pumps as I just put enough money towards the season on other purchases.

That brass pump is fine. I have the world's 2nd junkiest plastic one. Had the worst one from Walmart, they do nothing. The plastic one from the auto parts store does fine, just make sure the oil is warm. Not cold, not hot, just warm.

I bought a pnumatic jabsco rotary pump I run off of an air drill. The thing is a great pump, I have used it to pump gas, oil, water, just about anything. Being air powerd I don't have to worry about sparks, and it's only about $20 or so. If I've pumped gas or oil, I fill a 5 gal bucket and add some dish soap and pump that to clean it out. Had it for 3 years and it's still going strong.

I have this exact pump and really do NOT like it. I have twin v-8's and I pumped for what felt like hours to get the oil out (yes, I warmed the engines and oil first). Lot's and Lot's of pumping. I also pulled the filters first to vent the system a little better. Maybe I'm just lazy, will be interested to see what your experience is.

yep I've had a few of those..... 30 minutes of pumping while crouched over a hot engine in the burning sun is NOT my idea of fun.... I set up my electric pump and will never look back.... hook it up, go in a grab a cold soda.... drink said soda (or beer if you prefer) and a few minuted later put in the new oil and install the new filter.

I made my own, bought a Flo-Jet double diaphram pump off of e-bay. It will pull a sump dry in about 90 seconds.

I've tried many. LiquiVac is the easiest and cleanest.

Stay away from the $25-30 electric pumps. I've had two (on the second one) and they are marginal at best. After the engine is warm you could probably put down 2 beers in the time it will pump out 4 or 5 quarts, , , that is if your lucky enough that the hose doesn't come off of the OUT side of the pump and spray dirty oil onto your carpet. Pi$$ ME OFF!! Only reason I bought the second one is that I really havent found anything better until I read Tahorover's post above with the Flo Jet pump.

The best would be a pre-luber that has an oil change option.
