oil filter

My dad and I did an oil and filter change we filled it up with oil and the new filter and then started it and then oil started leaking out of the thread of the oil filter? what have we done wrong?<br /><br />Cheers Ben

Sounds like the old oil filter o ring was still in place.Remove the new filter and check if it is.Oh,did ya'll tight it 3/4 turn after hand tight?

I'll bet the old filter's gasket is still stuck to the block. That happens sometimes. Make it routine to wipe the surface with a rag before spinning on a new filter. You'll never miss a stuck gasket that way. It's a good thing you spotted it. Many have spun on the new filter and gone merrily on their way until all the oil pumped into the bilge. :eek:

If you don't find a gasket stuck to the block as suggested above, make certain you used the correct filter.
