Oil for safety backup

Because of the discussion about VRO failures, I was concerned about having a source of gas/oil mix in case of such a failure.
Since my pontoon had two 6 gallon tanks, I used straight gas in one and had a 50:1 mix in the other. My idea being that if the VRO no oil alarm sounded I could just switch tanks. Since I had no VRO problems, I was never using my backup gas/oil mix. Being concerned about stale gas, I think I figured out a solution. I now keep straight gas in both tanks and a pint of J/E XP30 in my toobox on the boat. If the alarm sounds, I can dump the oil in the gas tank, agitate it well and make my way home.

As an aside, I have an updated VRO pump that has never failed me. The original 1986 three wire pump always worked fine until the fuel pump side failed. The VRO side was still fine. Go figure?

CharlesW...I ran out of fuel once 30 miles from the dock and the only boat that stopped and offered me gas was a 4 stroker, and I didn't have any oil. So now I carry oil... :)

I carry 2 oars, but I just couldn't see how they would mix with the gas and do me any good, prolly just plug up the carb... :D
