Hello all, this has been driving me nuts, maybe someone has an idea. I have a 1989 evinrude 150
crossflow. Above 4000 rpm either the oil or the fuel horn goes off. Usually oil. Tanks are full, I,ve checked and cleaned the filters many times, usually a little sediment in the fuel filter whereas the oil filter is clean. I have between 80-95 compression on the cylinders. The engine seems to run about 190 degrees if I can trust the gauge. Other than the alarms going off it seems to run fine. Oh yeah, as soon as I drop back in rpm the alarm stops. Thanks.

Nautaclue... Exactly what alarm are you having? A steady constant beep, a beep every other second, a beep every 20 seconds or so?

If you are saying you get a steady horn and it stops as soon as you reduce throttle, it may be a fuel restriction warning. That means a kink in a hose, plugged vent in the tank, plugged filter etc.

Good luck!

I get either the fuel flow warning..steady tone or the oil flow..beeps every other second. I have
a hard time convincing myself that it is not related. Perhaps a weak VRO pump or insufficient crancase pressure to drive it at higher RPM?

Nautaclue.... It would appear that you have two problems, possibly related, possibly not. At any rate, treat them as seperate problems and cure one and then the other.

1 - Beep every other second = Failing VRO, Air in oil line (leak), Oil restriction (clogged filter or jammed primer bulb valve etc), no oil.

If no oil leaks or clogs are found, when this alarm sounds, aply a slight pressure to the oil primer bulb. If the alarm stops, but starts up again in a short amount of time, replace the VRO.

NOTE.... If the oil tank is in a location where it is subject to the elements (rain), check the tank for water. Rain or water spray will gain entrance to the interior of the tank. (No, I don't know how it gets in there).

2 - Steady constant beep = Overheating or Fuel Restriction (V/6). If the engine is overheating, the cure is obvious.

However, if the problem is a fuel restriction, that can be caused by a faulty primer bulb outlet valve. The inner portion of the valve falls out, turns itself around, then gets drawn back into the outer valve body, acting like a shut off valve. (Happens but unlikely).

The most common cause of a fuel restriction is as follows:

(Anti Siphon Valve)

Check at the built in fuel tank connection where the rubber fuel line attaches for a "Anti Siphon Valve". It will be (usually) aluminum, about 2" long, and the inner components will consist of a "Ball", a "Spring", and a "Ball Seat".

These valves are notorious for sticking and causing a fuel restriction. Remove the valve if it exists, knock out the inner components which converts it to a straight through fitting, then re-install it. If you're uneasy about converting that valve to a straight through fitting, then simply replace it.

Thanks Joe, I've replaced all those parts except for the oil bulb and VRO pump, don't remember if I've tried squeezing it or not. I'll do that as soon as I get the chance.

Notaclue... One thing I neglected to mention. That horn is an electronic horn, not an electrical horn, and it is prone to malfunctions.

There is a black ground wire built into it, and two slide on terminal connections. The terminal closest to the black ground wire must be the TAN sensor wire..... with the PURPLE 12v supply wire being further away on the opposite terminal. If those two wires are reversed, weird things can happen.

Also, even if the wires are connected properly, when the horn sounds and continues to sound, slide the TAN wire off of it. If the sound (alarm) continues on when you remove that wire, the horn is faulty. Worth keeping in mind.
