I have recently had my 1984 100hp V4 Commercial rebuilt......New pistons....Power packs in all a complete makeover...........The engine has been broken in with about 12 hrs of variable speeds and idling........It has awsome power with the V6 gearcase and 17" pitch prop. Real happy with it on the 1978 19' Manatee (Restored)

I puchased Evinrude oil for the break in, but was wondering if there is a compareable oil I could use or should I go out of my way and purchase Evinrude oil from the dealer/repair shop? Any opinions or advice? Would like to make sure it lasts!

also is there a maintennave schedule to adhere to? I guess I can get that info from the dealer etc. but could use some input from this forum........

Thanks in advance.......

Don

Re: Oil/gas mix

A lot of folks on here reccommend the synthetics, I know they will smoke less and may be a bit more environmentally friendly.

First time I have heard you can use a synthetic in an OB. I have used Mobile One in my 1997 Z-71 PU and have 169,000 mile and have never had to add oil between changes (4000 mi intervals)

Thanks,

Re: Oil/gas mix

I use both and use no special oil for breakin. I buy synthetics when I can, and also buy Merc oil for my Merc when at the dealership.

Not all oils tell you that they are synthetic.

I know Mercury doesn't manufacture oil, nor does Chrysler manufacture ATF.

But you can pick up a container of Pennzoil TCW-3 "Premium Plus" 2 cycle oil and it's stated to be Synthetic, but the Merc container doesn't. You can pick up a container of Valvoline ATF+4 (for newer MoPar trannys) and it says synthetic, but the container of MoPar ATF+4 doesn't mention it. Interesting....I'm of the opinion that OEM's deliberately deprive you of information....for whatever reason.....have an idea.....like you will go back to your dealer for everything, rather than go at it yourself thru the aftermarket supply chain.

Without a doubt, on my current engine, both oils hardly smoke at all and even if I troll for awhile and hammer down on it, where I used to get a cloud of smoke (years ago) when I came out of the hole now, you have to look closely to see any oil cloud at all.

More of my 2C

I assume you should stay with one or the other and no switch back and forth.............I don't mind a little smoke, which now that I have a 24/1 ratio for the break in, smokes quite a bit...............Just want to keep her running as long as possible.....
