HI Castaway, A 1987 40 hp Evinrude should have a VRO system on it. (Variable Ratio Oiling) Some people have bypassed using the seperate oil tank and mix the fuel and oil. The correct mixture would be 50 to 1, the same for most two cycle outboards.
