What would cause and how do I correct this problem? My AQ125A just started sucking some oil into the carb from the vent hose attached to the carb. What would cause this to happen?

it sounds like blow by , the cause would be a worn out engine- check for this .

cheers

+1 ^^^^^ Worn valve stem seals, guides, seats, piston rings etc. Probably need heads reconditioned minimally.

Ouch, that doesn't sound good. I was hoping you would tell be it was a bad check valve or something simple like that. If memory serves me correctly
automotive engines have some sorta check valve attatched to the valve cover. I just didn't see one in plain sight.
if I have to do the overhaul is it possible to plug the hose off for the rest of the season and then plan to do the repairs during the winter season?
thank you for your knowledge.

I personaly would pull the valve cover and make sure the oil return holes in the head are not plugged up. Then, unless its causeing your motor to run bad, or foul spark plugs, you could run it. If the return oil holes are plugged in your head, the oil level may be getting high and flowing to the carb, from the hose.

Re: Oil getting sucked into carb

Overall it doesn't use alot of oil. I've noticed that there is always a small amount of oil on the top plate of the carb but it never required oil to have to be added. This one time incident caught me by surprise. The boat was slow to plan off, then the engine began to choke itself out causing a cloud of white smoke. It took a few minutes to determine what happened. There was oil covering the top of the engine (I thought I blew the engine) and dripping from the breather hose. When I opened up the top of the carb system there was oil all over the place. I would say I lost less then one once of oil. I cleaned up the carb and the engine ran perfectly at lower speeds. I took the boat out the next day and had absolutely no porblems with it at all.

observe it and just run . do not remove and block the breather since it would rise crankase pressure. you may remove for testing at an idling engine the oil filler cap and look how severe it blows out of the filler.

your engine is old, but as long as it runs i would not pull the head or similar to look further into it. you may get more than one season out of it when you say that basicly it runs without issues.

cheers

Thank you Aerobat, that sounds reasonable. I just dont want to cause any permanent damage to the boat.

And thank you to everyone else for your imput. I plan to start researching now for a good mechanic and a price estimate in case it starts to reoccur frequently

Was the oil changed recenty, maybe overfilled?

Did you check the dipstick? Is the oil level rising, does the oil look ok or is it discolored or foamy?

Check the coolant level also, a coolant passage leak inside the engine will allow water into the oil and raise the level.
