Oil in 4 stroke exhaust 9.9 (1990s)

Im getting an oily film on the water around my early 90's 9.9 4 stroke. It appears to be from the exhaust because there is a little oil residue around the exhaust port. Is this normal at all? it runs great but i just got it and wonder if its from unadjusted valves or maybe bad rings. When i got it i could smell gas in the oil (which i changed). but i believe it has very low hours. any ideas?

always upright on the transom.

How about oil level, do you have a sight glass or dip stick (where is the oil level)

i have a dipstick. I had just changed oil and its the correct level.

the level is within the "ok" range (near the top) and i just cleaned the strainer.
