1987 boat, just purchased this august, alpha one drive
I replaced the gimbal bearing when purchased. The uni joint is rusted, so there was obviously a bad bellows in the past. I planned to replace the uni and the bearing at the very top of the drive (under the 4 inch cap) as it looked a little worn over the winter.

I just pulled the drive and the bellows had a 1/2 cup of gear lube in it. I know this means the oil seal behind the uni is gone. Can I get away with topping up the gear lube each time we go out, and then repair over the winter, or should I bite the bullet now and have the uni, bearings, and oil seals done before I bring it back to the water?

I don't know where you boat - but I suspect you don't have much more of a boating season. If it were me, I would do exactly what you are proposing. You will need to buy a new yoke assembly as the old one will leak when it is rusted.
