Hey guys, quick question. I noticed the oil is a little low in my upper unit. It shows on the very bottom of the dipstick. Also when I remove the small screw for the intermediate oil fill I can't actually see any oil.

I read on here that any 80 90 lube will do as long as you always use Type C in the lower unit. The only place I could purchase it was Walmart where I found a Quicksilver 80 90 gear lube but it says its for lower units! The oil I see on the upper dipstick is blue in color, this stuff is yellowish. It also says on the bottle not to mix lubes. Is that them trying to sell their own product or a real issue?

My question is should I wait and ask my mechanic which oil is already in there so as not to mix types or is it safer just to top it up with the 80 90 to be sure its properly lubricated for tomorrow. Also should I see oil overflowing out of the intermediate fill hole as its not an actual dipstick and if so should I add some 80 90 till I do?

We are planning on going out tomorrow and my mechanic was not open today to ask.

Any advice appreciated as always.

fill intermediate to bottom of threads
80W90 gear oil is fine for top up, but the levels should never go down.
I don't know what oil you bought specifically, but some Merc stuff has HP limits (??) and says it is only for outboard lowers up to 60HP or some nonsense, which is why I avoid it.
