I just removed my LU.. Inspecting the impeller... I removed the cover of the gear linkage shaft.. and it is FILLED with OIL...

Is this OIL causing my engine smoke? I disco'd my VRO due to a leaky oil side of fuel pump a while back, but never have checked any parts for oil..

I dont know if oil in the hole there is normal or not.

Yes, the gearcase is supposed to be full of oil. No, it's not causing your motor to smoke. You really should drain it before removing it from the motor.

The lower unit oil should be changed at least once a year. I do mine before the first freeze, in case any water gets in there. If it freezes it can crack your gearcase open.

I couldn't tell you when it was changed.. I've owned the boat for a few years. and its been at least that long.

The oil smells FOUL... probably time for replacing... Do I need to use gear oil? emphasis on NEED.

you must use outboard motor lower unit oil, walmart carries it. you fill from bottom hole until it runs out the vent hole. yes if is a foul smelling oil. easiest method to fill is buy one of the little pumps, or you have to buy it in squeezable tubes.
