I am new to this forum. I have never owned an I/O and looked at a holiday w/ a 140 I/O. Boat ran great 37 MPH @ 4500 RPM WOT. I did notice a small amound of oil behind boat after I stopped for a couple minutes. Fluids all look clean w/no milk or water evident. Any ideas? Boat looks almost new, seats perfect and no fading. Any ideas about what the issue could be.

Thanks

Do you mean in the water behind the boat? Are you sure it was oil, or just some stuff floating on the water? there's all kinds of grease fittings and lubed stuff on an outdrive and mine leaks a drop or two of hydaulic fluid from the tilt arms. Two drops of any petroleum product looks like a hundred gallons when it spreads on water. Plus all your exhaust is going into the water.

Thanks that is what I was thinking. Since there is no water in the oil or lube it's probably not a big deal. Is 37 MPH at 4500 rpm WOT about right for 18 foot holiday I/O?

The RPM's are more important than the speed. 140 hp in an 18 footer, that sounds about right to me.

Now go buy it and get us some pics!!!

djepers how do you get 35mph out of a 22' starcraft.
What prop and rpms are you running .
The reason I ask is I am running 28 mph (gps) @ 4600 rpms, with my 21' cheiftain. My motor is fresh 140hrs old, carb is opening to wot.
Maybe the cheiftain is heavier and with fishing gear that is the difference.

I get 35mph by holding her wide open and trimming it up a bit :D. She turns 5500 rpm which is the sweet spot for the engine according to the book. My prop is a 15 x 17 aluminum. The speed was checked with a hand held Garrmin GPS. Everytime I had my GPS with me it would go 35.0, and not a tenth faster. Also had 2 adults and about 24 gallons of fuel, no other gear.

On a side note my Dad was curious as to how much fuel it burns to get an idea of range we'd have when I get the 50 gallon tank cleaned and hooked up. So one evening we went to Spring Lake (Mi) and took off with a full 6 gallon portable. I set the speed at 25mph & 4000rpm's and we just kept doing laps around the lake till she quit. Each lap was 8 miles and she ran out in 22 miles. That figures out to 3.6 mpg and this took 55 minutes in which I never touched the throttle. So about 6 gph @ 25mph. FWIW.

My 89 140 is supposed to go at 44-4800 rpms but I still need to go down in pitch. The best I could get so far was 31 mph @ 3900. I'm hoping that at 4700 or so I can get a blistering 35mph:D

Remember I have an outboard so I don't know if we're comparing apples to apples...

My 22 Holiday With a full tank and all fishing gear trimed out will do right at48-50 MPH. I do not run that fast but that is what we found with the GPS. Prop is a 141/4 by 21 pitch at around 4800 rpm. The motor is a Johnson 1976 200 hp in very good condition Outboard of course.

Oil on the water could be from winterization oil or perhaps piston rings not seated well after sitting a while because they are varnished or carboned up.

No oil in water and no water in oil... you are good to go. Synthetic oils will help you with cleaning varnish/carbon. For starters poor a little water down the engines carb when you hold the throttle open at a high idle. Steam cleans the engine and works well. No joke!!!
