My 88 50 HP that I just got says on the engine cowling its oil injected. There is not a seperate container for oil, or any lines running into the boat that look like an oil line. Im new at the outboard arena so Im just wondering what exactly "oil injected" means in my case. Should there be a sperate contanier for oil aside from the gas tank? And if so, there isnt one on my boat so should I pre-mix with the gas? Thanks for the info.

Re: oil injected?

If you can find it, post the model number and serial number of your engine.

Could very well be that a new cowling has been put on your motor. My 82 V6 says "VRO" on the cowling. It does not, nor I believe it's never had, VRO. I pre-mix the fuel.

I doubt you have oil injection, but until you find out, mix your gas with oil at 1 pt/6 gallons (50:1).

Re: oil injected?

I cant find a serial # in the usual location, but I was told by someone else on here that the # on the small round aluminum piece sunk into the block is the serial # as well.

I got the number off the round aluminum piece.

The number is B286562

Thanks for the help.

Re: oil injected?

I called Mercury and gave them my serial #. Which they were able to pull up the year, model #, and HP with. They said that my engine was indeed oil injected. So Im guessing mine was converted since there is no oil tank with a line running to the engine? I guess Ill have to wait for the manuals to come in(later this week hopefully) and see what its supposed to look like compared to what it is. Although, nothing on the engine looks like it isnt original.

Re: oil injected?

The Wright Stuff, read my post above titled oil injection alarm------READ THIS, at the bottom of the long reply that I wrote, there is a link to free online manuals for all current Merc's from the last 15 years. Hope this helps, and have a great day, Joe
