oil injection warning

I just purchased a boat with a 1997 50hp johnson motor. I was told that it is better to run the engine pre mixed as opposed to the oil injection that it has now. I heard that the oil pump can stop an cause a major engine problem. Is this common? Do you know if this engine has a warning system just in case the oil stops flowing? If not, can i have one installed? I dont know much about boat engines.

My guess is you have a some sort of not-oiling warning system. The best way to find out is get yourself a engine manual ( at least, get a owners manual ). Quite a few guys with VOR systems disconnect them and run premix because they don't trust the auto-oilers.
Hope this helps.

c/6

Hooty

I unhooked the vro and premix the fuel simply because I don't trust myself to check it. The vro on your motor is quite reliable, you just need to get yourself a manual and make sure you follow the instructions on upkeep. just a Thought

If it is actually a 1997, it came with System Check which consists of 4 warning lites for overheat, no oil, check engine, and low oil. If it doesn't, you can add a gage with them.

No matter what year, you have an alarm horn that sounds a loud beep, beep, beep, etc. if there is no oil. There is a beep every 30 seconds or so, if the oil tank is getting low. A solid tone means overheat on your engine.

You should be hearing a short beep when you turn the key on, if not, get it checked by a QUALIFIED tech. Order an owners manual and a service manaul from any authorized dealer.
