Hello
new to this forum

I am buying a 1989 23ft proline with a 1991 200 mariner. The boat and the motor are in excellent shape. One troubling thing is that the owner told me he removed the plastic screw or pump because it was bad and he just mixes the oil into the gas at 50:1 He told me that it was a pretty common thing to do. The obvious thing is that if it was put there by the manufacturer it should be there but has anybody else heard of this

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Jim

Re: oil injection

If you can still contact the old owner, try to find out if he put the kit that is made for that purpose, if not it should be done to prevent future damge. Do a search on the Mercury forum on oil injection and you will come up with an hour or so reading about it.
People put the kit in because the engine has to be disassembled to replace the drive gear on the crankshaft.

Jim I have a 1994 Evinrude. I did the same thing to my Engine in 2001. I have had no trouble. The oil injector system is a great thing if it works. If it fails your motor will burn up. You will find two cycle engine lasted forever in the old days, because there was no auto injection systems. When you put the oil in gas you know your engine is getting oil.

Re: oil injection

IMHO, any motor that's had the oil injection removed has had it's value cut in half.

Speaking from experience of working on these things since before outboards had it, Far more motors that are premixed suffer catastrophic failure from pre-mix screw-ups than ever failed due to failed oil injection by 10 to 1.

Re: oil injection

It is very common ( I own a 1999 250 EFI with oil injection removed). I agree that the "resale" value will suffer due to the removal of the oil injection, but in all reality it is a 1991 engine and I doubt that you are buying it as an investment. If you buy a 1991 engine, you are buying for keeps.

As said before, make sure the removal has been done correctly and calculate the fuel premix twice (old adage: measure twice, cut once) before adding oil to fuel.

If the engine passes the compression test and runs well during the sea trial then you can use the fact that the oil injection has been removed as a bargaining tool to get a lower price. If you do buy it, the first thing you should do is buy the Merc. shop manual and learn everything you can about the engine. The second thing to do is visit this site as much as possible because it contains a wealth of info.
Good Luck
