Oil Injection

Hi, I just bought a Promax 225 from 1996 with few hours on the clock. I think the engine slept a little. I am now going for a full service before putting it on the water again. I have a big concern with the oil injection system. I’m not feeling comfortable with this plastic drive gear. What would you suggest? My first choice is not to premix... but I think it might be the only way to go.. Thanks for sharing your thoughts !

I'm over my head on this one. I tried to poke around to get an idea of the cost of a new pump or parts. Nada. When I Googled your Promax with "lube injection" I saw many YouTube and other how-to's on removing the system for premix. Take that for what it's worth.

Why are you not comfortable with an engineered solution?

It's not like some shade tree replaced a metal gear with plastic to save a couple of bucks.

The old plastic gears would get brittle and break,..

I'd replace it with a new one and run it,..

Run it on premix till your sure it working and using oil. They(gear) don't just up an fail...they either get damaged for overheat or pump bind.

Thanks for your feedback! Replacing the gear is a major job. The engine is 22 years old, with not much than 170+/- hours on it. It sat for a while. Oil injection is working just fine for the time being, but i’m planning on using the engine regularly as from now. This is where **** can happen. As the promax is a pretty awesome machine, I don’t want to blow it up just for a tiny piece of Nilon...

do you know tha history of tha motor?.. if its never been over heated?.. any problems at all?.. if not ya might wanna consider tha oiler delete..

sometimes tha so called "plastic" (actually a composite) gear might jus give up but its normally due to heat somewhere down tha line... if its workin' and motor goes down most are really quick ta blame tha oiler when in reality its something else.. jmo

what Faz says..... pre mix at 100 ta one ( name brand blend) till your confident its workin' or not.....

Pre mix it for sure.
Not just the drive gear or pump you need to worry about..it’s the whole oil delivery system.
Cant beat peace of mind. It’s horrible when it goes wrong. I know this first hand on an old 200 merc.
