Oil inside trim motor, fixable or toast?

Found out why my trim pump motor was sounding and working strangely. Took it apart and found oil inside, probably due to it being half submerged in water last year. I already have a replacement, but is it fixable, or should I toss it? Also, there is oil underneath the trim motor where the motor shaft/coupler is. That oil should not be there either should it? Need to know before I put the new one on! Thanks!

Aw c'mon, do I gotta go crawling back to my high price ex-marine mechanic for an answer?

I'm going to get that puddle of oil out of there cuz I'm sure it's not supposed to be there, but I'm still wondering if the motor is fixable?

And don't forget Mom today mateys!:D

OK a couple things as to why your question might not be getting replies.

Do you mean you found WATER inside, or OIL? Your message states you found oil inside. There's supposed to be oil (not literally - it's specific, I think it's transmission fluid, or it's power steering fluid, I can't recall), in there. It looks like oil.

Also, obviously the fluid needs to be replaced if it's contaminated with anything, water or otherwise. Have you done that? Have you cleaned up the leak to see exactly what's leaking? Does the pump, once the fluid has been replaced, make any noise? Does it work?

There's some basic troubleshooting you need to do on your own before someone can help out.

In general, water in the pump is not the end of the world. It's not good, though. It's worse if that's salt water. You need to replace the trim fluid with all new.

No, I mean I found OIL INSIDE the trim motor itself. When this motor was replaced 2 years ago by a shop, the mechanic said oil had gotten forced up into the motor probably from being submerged in water.

Well, it happened again last summer (water intrusion problem now fixed) and motor would not work in the down position and hesitated and took a few seconds to run smoothly. I did all the troubleshooting procedures per Factory Merc manuals and found bad down solenoid. Replaced that and cleaned and tightened everything but motor still sounded and acted strange.

Took motor off resevior, took it apart and found OIL inside motor. Oil in the resevoir looks clean, no sign of water, but I will dump it and clean it up and put in fresh. I have new motor to install. Is the oily motor fixable or should I toss it?

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but how much clearer can "Oil Inside Trim Motor" title be? At least I don't start my question with "Please Help"!

LL,

I have had quite a few DC motors apart and oil inside of them will not hurt them per se'.

I think you could easily just clean it out with a little solvent or Kerosene. dry it well and use a little fine emory cloth on the commutator to clean it up. Put it back together and see what happens.

Cheers,

Rick
