Oil leak around oil pressure sender

Hi there, I have been a long time reader but only just joined the forum as now I have my own boat. It's an old girl and needs some love and I thought I would start with trying to resolve an oil leak that dirtied the bilge over quite some time from what I can gather. When I got the boat there was about a litre of oil in the bilge and the bilge is heavily encrusted with dried oil and goo. The problem is compounded by a water leak at the transom but I'll deal with that next. It has taken many trips to the recycling station with watery oil bilge goo and many oil soaker mats but I am starting to see clear water in the bottom of the boat.

When looking over the engine and using a mirror to see where my head doesn't fit, what I thought would be leaking oil pan actually seems to be an oil leak quite high up on the back of the engine. The most oil is around the oil pressure sender location.

The engines are 5.0/LX with alpha 1 gen 2 drives according to the numbers:

Engines – 0D447372/0D447341
Transoms – 0D540420/0D540421
Drives – 0D492823/0D492824

I wanted to order the parts for replacing the oil pressure sender but I ran across a bit of a snag in that there is an elbow to make clearance for the distributor (I'm guessing) that is no longer available. Can anyone point me to the right path for what the replacement items might be? There is no superseding part number so I'm a bit confused.

My engine has the ignition module on the exhaust elbow and the three part numbers for the sender are:
13 815425 1 SENDER ASSEMBLY, Oil Pressure
16 46932 1 ELBOW
17 42554 1 NIPPLE

It is part number 46932 - Elbow that is no longer available.

Anyone have any idea what I need to do?

Cheers,

Mike.

go to a good auto parts store or good marine parts store and by the brass elbow either 45 or 90 degrees.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to pull it to be able to match the size I guess. I'm hoping that this is the leak and not the intake manifold whick looks quite rusty in places. Do you know if I can use an automotive oil pressure sender as well?

doubtful on the auto version. I tried once and found them to work in reverse. brass fittings rarely leak unless cracked and then they would squirt until all the oil was pumped out of the engine. A rusted housing will sometimes just drip. The thread is called 1/8 inch pipe thread.

You would be better off going to a hardware store to get the components for the elbow. I did a quick online search at home depot and found 2 parts that will be exactly what you need; LF A716 and LF A700 will run you about $7 for both. Remember you don't want to use any sort of teflon on the threads as the sending units requires continuity to ground to perform correctly.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... I believe the automotive senders run on a different ohm scale,....
'n I agree, the fittin's are 1/8" pipe, 'n available at any hardware store,...
I'd think yer Leak is probably elsewhere though,... Like BD says, they don't just leak, unless bumped quite hard,......
The rusted intake sounds Suspicious,....

Thanks again. I bought a new sender, I'll have to have a look at the nipple and elbow once I get them off and see what's required.

If I can't use Teflon tape, what can I use as a sealer? Brass threads aren't very good at sealing without help.

Bad advice. Teflon tape, when used correctly will not prevent the sender from doing it's job. In fact, you should use it, sparingly. I use it all the time and nary an issue.

Ayuh,.... Or just use a Paste, 'n it's a Non-issue anyways,... I carry white teflon, form-a-gasket #2, 'n #3 on my mobile toolbox,... Any one of 'em will work just Fine in z00m's application,.....
