So I thought I had a oil leak from my valve cover gasket, but after getting the exhaust manifold off and doing some visual inspection I couldn't figure out where the leak was coming from...

I buttoned the motor back up and cranked it and found this....

this is a video of the starboard side by the starter. There is a hole cast in the block (my guess is its for a dipstick)...

Its not threaded (that I can see) and oil is flinging out of it while running.

I'm thinking a rubber plug will fix it...

Thoughts?

If you don't already have a dipstick for the oil, get one and put it there. Your right, that is a good location for a dipstick to be.

The dipstick goes to the bottom of the pan, not in the block. That hole is normally plugged. I usually just carefully clean the oil out of the hole, then use a bolt with an oil resistant sealer/adhesive on it. let it dry and your good to go.

yeah the dipstick is on the port side and threads into the bottom side of the pan.

I don't see threads to recieve a bolt...
DonS. if you're sure its threaded, any idea of the size of the bolt and thread pitch?

This is a new block...so I'm sure I just missed this from the old block.

It's not threaded. That is why I said clean the oil out of the hole, (pieces of a rag on a stick and some acetone) and then some sealer/adhesive to GLUE it in and seal in the process. I used the black Permatex sealer used on the intake manifold ends. Don't remember the exact name.
I think it was a 3/8 bolt I used.
