Unit has been winterized and is sitting in my barn. I have noticed over the last few months that there is oil leaking from the bottom of the lower unit. Around the prop and possibly through the exhaust port (I have to double check about the exhaust port to be sure of this one). At first it was old black oil but now I notice the new clean oil slowly seeping out. What is this from and what do I do about it. There is probably about 3 ounces that has leaked out over the last 2 months of sitting. Thanks for any help and advice.

Re: Oil leak from lower unit

The black stuff is usually unburned oil from the fuel mix comming out the exhaust and no problen. As to the other it could be a seal in the gearcase or quite commonly the oring gasket for the fill and drain plug. To pin it down check the oil level and use new orings. After you run it the next time (in the water) check again for water in the gear oil. If milky in color it is a seal in the case itself. Then it is time for a pressure/vacume test to determine which seal needs to be replaced.

I have to assume "winterized" includes fogging the motor with oil. The excess oil in the exhaust from fogging slowly runs downhill and out the exhaust, carrying carbon and soot with it which makes it black
