Hi all,

Took the deckboat out Saturday. It ran well all day. Engine is a 1993 Evinrude 88 SPL. Got home and noticed an oily film at the base of the engine on the lower cover. Took off the top cover and there is a oilly film around the exhaust housing adapter at the base of the motor. There is also some oilly residue in the carburator intake. The power heads show NO sign of any leakage. The exhaust housing also shows NO sign of any leakage.

I took off the plugs, they are a nice even tan/brown.

Could the oil be from the carbs or from the exhaust housing adapter?

Is this a concern?

I know there shouldnt be any leaking of any sort on a engine. On a car valve cover gaskets tend to leak, is this normal for this engine?

I'll get some carb cleaner this week and clean up the engine. I'll either put the mufflers on or water test the motor to ascertain the actual location of the leak.

Thanks for the help.

Triggerr, I have a 48 SPL, and I don't really recall any residue to speak of on my engine. I do keep it coated well with Corrosion Blocker, so it might cover it up.

Follow up:

I cleaned the base of the motor with degreaser.
I took off the carb cover and observed a good amount of oilly spray on it.

All was cleaned and hosed off. After drying out, I started the motor on the mufflers and let it run for a bit.

I did not see any leakage at all. No sign of any problems.

I think the oilly film was blow back from the carbs that leaked out of the overflow nozzle on the carb cover.

The base of the engine and interior of the engine cover was not clean to start with.

It is clean now and I will look for any more oilly discharge.
