Have '77 Johnson 9.9 and when I lie it on it's back (prop facing ground), it slowly drips LU oil out. Oil comes from where prop meets the lower unit. Is this just a seal that can easily be fixed or must the LU be disassembled ? (it's not gas\oil - it's LU fluid) ... thanks

Don't believe it is oil build up ... seems like LU OIL .. anyone ever seen this and if so is it something that can be fixed without disassembling Lower Unit ?

If the oil is clean and clear looking,as the oil in the gearcase should be,then it is gear oil.
If it is blackish, and even milky,it could be residue of the exhaust.
If you decide it is gear oil, you'll at least have to pull the propshaft bearing housing out
to replace the propshaft seals. But a motor that old ... all the seals are old,so a complete reseal, complete dissassembly is called for.New water pump parts as needed also.

DHP

Thanks for taking the time to answer me ! This site is great. I actually printed and read all of the 9.9 article posted before purchasing this motor ... great article. Found it at an alternate URL and and it was missing some of the pictures. the URL listed below has all pictures. Thanks again
