I just recently bought a (1961?) Evinrude Model 50525 75 HP outboard and had a few questions about it. Last night i put it in the down position on my boat and after a while there was what looked like oil dripping from it, is that really bad and is the engine salvagable. The top end has been rebuilt recently but im not sure about the bottom. I havent try to run it yet, because i want to make sure it is in good shape. How is that engine overall? This is my first boat and i dont know much about them. Thanks.

What color is the oil, what does it smell like, and exactly where is it coming from??

It came from about half way up the lower part of the motor, two sections up from the bottom. I took the oil fill screw out at the bottom and nothing came out, should it? The oil that dripped out yesterday was clear brown like oil should look, not milky but smelled like gas.

The oil you found is oil from the fuel system. Nothing to worry about. The lower unit needs to be checked though. If you took out the bottom plug and nothing came out then you probably need to service it. Be aware though that there are 2 plugs. One on the side right below the cavitation plate and oil will not come out of this one when you remove it. The other one is on the underside of the gear housing (torpedo looking thing) and oil should come out if you remove it. Walker

I strongly suggest that you get a manual for you motor. It will answer many of your questions and help you maintain it. Also most libraries have gereric outboard manuals.
