Anyone know if there is a way of telling if an oil leak coming from a 84-86 140 mercruiser 4 cylinder is coming from the rear main crankshaft seal or from the rear of the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine out? I can see oil dripping out with the engine running from a vent space near the back of the starter motor, there is also fresh oil on the flywheel cover on the other side of the engine. If its the rear main crank seal I'll mostlikely buy a drop in engine as the compression in this motor is only about 110 per cylinder. If its just a gasket the motor runs so good I'll just replace the gasket. Hope for some advise/experience on this problem.

Either way the engine's got to come out, so once it is out, assess it and make a decision...

Why fear it? Only takes about 2 hours to pull an engine....
