I have a 1977 Sea Ray 24' Cuddy Cabin with a Volvo/Chevvy 350.

This weekend when I checked the oil before leaving the marina I noticed it was very low and took 2 quarts to bring it to an acceptable level.
I put about only about 2 to 3 hours use on the engine and noticed the bilge contained a lot of oil, after checking the dipstick and topping off again I found it had lost about 3 quarts almost certainly to the bilge.

I inpected all around the engine that I could see and was not able to see oil on the engine anywhere on top, front or sides or back where I could see with the possible exception of a little around the oil pressure sending pipe at the back of the engine, I also looked in this area with the engine on idle but wasn't able to see the oil escaping obviously.

The temperature and the oil pressure on the boat are both good.

Can anybody suggest where else I might look for a leak that could loose that ammount of oil in such a short time or ask me question if you need more info.

Thanks...

It could be the rear main seal. Use a mirror and flashlight to check for a leak between the rear of the oil pan and the bellhousing. Unfortunately, you will have to pull the engine to fix it. Or it could also be something as simple as a loose oil pan drain plug or loose oil pan bolts. To lose that much oil in that short of a period, without the boat smoking like a house on fire, certainly points towards a leak.

The rear main seal did occur to me, however I had ruled that out thinking it was leaking much faster than I would expect a rear main seal to leak, any opinions on that?

az, have you checked the oil filter? should be port side of motor aft near the oil pan. You could remove and replace it easily. I believe a Fram PH-30 will replace it but be sure to check that number.Pick up a filter at Wal-Mart and do a Quick swap to eliminate that as a possible leak.

Actually now that you mentioned it, I did replace the oil filter this year whilst doing the oil change, the oil filter I took off was installed by the previous owner and was on so tight that it was nearly impossible to remove, I even broke an oil filter wrench in the process, I wonder if that is why it was so tight, maybe there is a problem getting that to seal??

az, The oil filter should only be hand tight and the mating surface "clean" and fresh oil on filter gasket. The reason I use the fram filters is they have a good gripping finish which makes for an easy change and they also have the "extra guard" and "extra capacity" filters.
I don't work for Fram and boat mainly on fresh water lakes.

I suppose it isn't a big problem in Arizona, but here in Florida my first thought on an old boat like that would be a rust problem. Especially since it is apparently a sudden leak. I have had oil pans rust through - or the dip stick tube, etc. Just something to check.
