Oil Leak?

I have a 1991 Evinrude 150 outboard on a 92 Stratos F/S. I took the boat out a couple of weeks ago with no problems and then parked it. I was out of town for a week and a half and when I returned yesterday I noticed a blue oil coming from the upper part (from somewhere under the hood) of the motor and running down the outside shaft of the lower end. I looked around and cannot see where it is coming from. Any idea at all where to start? I am new to boats so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have only owned the boat for a couple of months so I hope I do not have a big problem.

Re: Oil Leak?

I ASSUME it is oil injected?

If so, you need to look very closely at the lines that feed your oil injection pump. You may have to remove the air silencer and some other stuff to have a good look.

People tend to neglect rubber lines, under the hood. One of the FIRST things I do, on an unknown (used) outboard, is to replace every rubber line.

It's not hard to do, if you take your time, and make diagrams, etc. Well worth it, in my opinion.

Vist your John/Rude dealer to get an assortment of the correct clamps. DON'T reuse old ones!

Re: Oil Leak?

Yes, it is oil injected. I will look at all of the hoses and see if it is leaking from one of them. I hope it is something easy/inexpensive to repair. I am new to boating and really cannot afford to spend a ton on repairs already. I just bought the boat and have only had it in the water now 3 times. Thank you for the advice.

Stratos,

Replacing ALL of those hoses is CHEAP insurance against a MAJOR failure. $50.00 vs. $3,000.00+

Re: Oil Leak?

DJ,
Thanks again. I will take a look and see what I need to get those hoses changed. The last thing I want is to spend $3000 on repairs! Lets hope I am not already there, but it ran great right before parked it, so I am optimistic.
