Oil Leak?

Been reading previous threads on this topic and leaning toward unburned oil, but wanted to give you guys more detail to help diagnose my problem. I went to an OK Lake on Aug 17 and tried my fishing luck. 4.5 hours later, one fish, and the water temp reaching mid 80's, I was done. I started up the 75hp Mariner and noticed some blue oil smoke coming from the head of the motor; at that point, it wasn't much. As I was heading toward the ramp, I decided to make one more pass on a point close by, but no luck. Started the beast again, and again more blue smoke was noticed. I ran it back to the ramp w/out any problems other than the smoke, got it loaded, and came home. Sat., 9-7, I noticed a very small amount of oil dripping from my propped-up motor. I checked it out, noticed it coming from the bottom of my lower unit. It appeared to be pretty clean oil; didn't look like the same color of oil that I put in the oil dispenser/compartment of the engine. Not sure if it's coming from the lower unit; unsure of the color of Gear oil used. Since I've bought this boat 2 years ago, I haven't changed out the lower unit gear oil. Plan on doing that now, plus changing out the seals of the drain/fill plugs. Could this be my solution to the leaking oil or could it be something else? Oh, forgot to mention, before my fishing trip on the 17th, I refilled my oil dispenser/compartment. Could I possibly have overfilled the dispenser? Since I'm new to this forum stuff, any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Oil Leak?

Its normal to have a bit of oil smoke on start up especially with a cold motor. More than likely its unburnt 2 stroke oil, it collects in the exhaust chamber and drains out while just sitting, it should be a dark color and smell a bit like gas and oil. Gear oil has its own smell. But if you think its leaking out then draining and refilling the LU is in order just to make sure water is not getting in the LU.

Re: Oil Leak?

The leaking oil was not a dark color nor was it smelling like the mixture; it was pretty clear. Hopefully, the cure will be the leakage out from the seals of the lower unit. I'll soon see.

Okie, Gear oil stinks pretty good. I doubt you could mistake it for 2 cycle oil. Stick in a finger and give it a sniff.

Whew, not gear oil. Chris your right. What causes the light color in the 2 cycle oil I'm seeing.

Re: Oil Leak?

Make sure your oil lines aren't leaking. Mine disintegrated a few years back. I had to replace every hose on the motor.

Re: Oil Leak?

When you dilute the 2 cycle oil with gasoline, it becomes a lighter color. Remember, oil is mixed with the gasoline, and pumped to the carbs. Maybe you are seeing discharge of mixed fuel, from the carbs?

Ok, here are some pics. The first one depicts the bottom of the Mariner. The clear brown liquid is the oil/gear lube.

This second pic depicts the back of the Mariner facing the transom. The oil/lube moisture appears to be coming from that black stopper looking thing, but really not sure.
