I have a 2006 4 stroke 6hp. Tohatsu. I had in in heated storage since last fall. I laid it flat in it side with the gear shift leaver facing up as it should be. When I lifted the motor up in a verticle postion oil started to leak out on the lower unit from the prop on the inside shaft area. Do I have a dried up seal? Will it re-seal standing up in the vertical position? Should I get the seal replaced if that is the actual problem. Can I do it myself or should an authorized dealer do it? If it is not the seal what can it be? Thanks for any help.

Re: Oil leaking lower unit

Is it gear oil (LU lube) or crankcase oil? The prop shaft seal can get torn if fishing line or similar gets caught. No, it won't heal itself. It's pretty easy to change. I would recommend using a Factory service manual so you don't lose the clutch pin, etc.
