oil level sensor causing warning siren to sound

I have an '89 90hp merc, and the warning siren went of on our last outing. The siren sounds constantly with the key in the run position whether the motor is running or not. I found the junction where the three wires from the overheat, oil pressure, and oil level sensors connect to the engine harness, and disconnected all three. I touched them one-by-one to the siren wire, and the one from the level sensor is tripping the siren-with the level almost full. Has anyone heard of these sensors failing-and would it be ok to just leave this one wire disconnected since I keep the oil level full anyway? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

yes, check for jellied oil in the resovar. will plug intake and cause failure, dump, clean with napatha and refill, oil res should be full , will stop alarm, ron

Does it have a reserve tank on the motor it's self? If there is air in the top of that tank the float will remain lower in the tank and set off the alarm. Remove the cap and top it off and it will quit if that is the problem.....................Jerry

The resovoir is nearly full, and the siren is still sounding. I took the cap off thinking there might be air pressure in there for some reason, but that didn't do anything. Do you know if there is a float bulb of some sort in there, or is it more complex than that.

Re: oil level sensor causing warning siren to sound

To add to my last post, My engine has 1 reservoir mounted on the side, under the cowl. The cowl has a view window to monitor the oil level w/o having to open it up. I understand that some of these motors have a main oil tank, and a second smaller one. Mine has just the one. It has an oil line coming out of the bottom, as well as two wires for the sensor. If there is a float, mine is stuck to the bottom...Thanks for the replies-I'm sure that with help I'll get this bugger figured out.

Allright guys-got it figured out! I drained the tank, and at the bottom there's a little donut shaped bulb that slides up and down a plastic peg. when I reach down in there and pull up on it, the siren goes away. Looks like it's lost it's buoyancy because adding oil will not float it enough to open the circuit. I'm just gonna keep the tank good and full till I can find the part and fix it. Thanks again for the help-I'm going fishing...

Basicly the same problem as the dual tanks. Glad you found it. No one needs to worry about his expensive motor blowing up...................have fun on the water.........................Jerry
