I just bought a 1975 Johnson 130 horse motor. I do not know what oil mix to run. Can anybody help?

50:1

I don't think there was a 130 in 1975. What do you really have?

Re: Oil mix

Mickeyboy,
TWC-3 rated 2 stroke oil at 50:1 and a little heavier on the oil if you run it hard or race.
And ezmobee is correct, in 1975 Johnson made a 135hp no 130hp.

Re: Oil mix

Thank you for the info. I bought the motor with a boat and was told it is a 1975 135 horsepower Johnson. I guess I will have to look up the numbers and find out what it really is. Does any one know where I can look that info up?

Re: Oil mix

Just re read my original post and realized my error. It is a 135 hp not 130. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Oil mix

Unfortunatly I do not. That was my only disappointment with the boat motor combo, otherwise it was a great deal. Can the motor b converted to power tilt?

Re: Oil mix

There is a power tilt & trim for it but they are not great to work on, rare and pretty expensive. They pop up on ebay once in a while, usually around $400 /450. Another option might be to look for a CMC tilt unit. Might be just as much, more if new, but they are a much better unit.

I just sold one with a 135 that I had. Never had it on the water but they seem like great motors.

Re: Oil mix

I am looking forward to getting it on the water. When I bought the boat the other day they ran it for me and it started right up and ran great so I am excited. This is a major upgrade for me. My first and only other boat was a 14 foot tri-hull with a 9 horse Johnson.

This is dead on correct. I tried for years to find a reasonable deal on a TnT unit for my '73. The pre-'78 units always for for $400ish. The CMC unit, which is around $400-500 is a really nice unit and if you ever get a newer motor with built in TnT, you can probably sell the CMC unit for close to what you paid for it.

I'd love to me able to tell you that TnT doesn't make a huge difference and that you'll be fine without but I'd be lying. My '81 90 with TnT on my 18' hull beats the pants off my '73 85 without TnT on a 16' hull.

Your 135 should be a great motor though. Enjoy it. When I was in the local BRP dealer to get some parts, it looked, according to their computer, that I could still get pretty much anything for that '73 that I'd likely need. I think the lower units might be a smidge on the rare side but not as bad as an electric shift motor.

Re: Oil mix

Thank you for all the help everyone. I do have one more question. I have been looking up Cmc units and all the ones I'm finding all say they are rated for up to 130 horsepower. Do you think it would be a problem to run one with my 135 horse?

Re: Oil mix

Considering your motor is crank rated as opposed to prop rated like the newer ones, you're probably actually well under the limit. I wouldn't be concerned.

Re: Oil mix

Ok thank you for that. I am pretty new to boating so I really appreciate all the good info. I'm hoping to get the boat out for the first time this weekend so I will see just how much of a bear it is with the manual tilt but I'm thinking the cmc might go pretty high on my boats to do list.
