I have oil on the the inj. side of my motor behind the oil tank. Enough that it is slightly leaking out the bottom of the crowling. Is this normal?

NO. There should be no oil or fuel under your cowling. Check your lines and fittings for leaks. This might require looking while the engine has a decent load on it (you might want someone you REALLY trust, drive the boat while you perform this leak check)!

I noticed that some of the inj. hoses have zipties instead of metal spring clips holding the hoses onto the fittings. Could this be the problem?

Tie wraps are the Merc standard for those fittings. Don't fool around with old fuel or oil lines. I had a weeper on the hose coming of the fuel pump going to the filter. Rather than mess around, I pulled a section of fuel line and a section of oil line. Got two feet of clear, poly line at home depot to replace the oil lines, brought the 1/4" Black hose to a merc dealer and bought replacement fuel hose (tell the Merc salesan you only want the generic fuel rated hose). The fuel lines that merc precuts is about 7 bucks a foot, generic runs about 1.30 per foot). Get some new tie wraps at home depot while you are there.

You may have to warm up the ends of each section of hose to get them on the fittings. Put the tie wraps om good and tight. When you cut the tie wrap ends be sure the are no sharp edges left that could chaf an adjacent hose (you should be able to spin the tie wrap to make sure.

Run that engine and check for leaks. Mine has been running great for many seasons.

Good luck.

I'm going to replace all of the line this weekend and clean her all up. I will give her a run and see if she leeks anymore. Thanks for the help. John.

There are 2 different sizes of hose on the oil injection system. I imagine that is why the above post says you might have to heat the hose to install, that because you have too small of a line.
The TCW3 oil you are seeing is probably coming from the vent line on the engine oil tank. If you look at the lower starboard side of the tank, there should be about a 6 inch piece of line just hanging there. It is connected to a 2 psi check valve and it is probably allowing oil to drip out. If ypu want to check it, use a small clear plastic water bottle and drill a hole in the bottle cap so the hose will fit in it and run the engine and see if oil is collecting there. If that is the problem, then replace the valve, cost is about $15. The next area of concern would be the boat oil tank is not releasing the oil pressure after shut down and staying pressurized and forcing oil through the system and then running out of the carbs. There is also a 2 psi valve on the lower starboard side of the engine that controls the pressure on the tank. Just follow the line back to the lower starboard side of the engine.

I changed the line from the oil tank to the oil pump and the oil pump to the fuel line. I used two different size pieces of tube I purchased from a marina. I don't see a vent hose on the tank. I do see what appears to be a vent on the top of the tank. Must be a different year of model you are thinking of, maybe? I had it out today but didn't run it to hard. I washed out the crowling and motor before I took it out so I will give it a chance to dry and check for oil tomorrow. Seems to run fine. Hopefully the lines took care of it.
