Oil on transom.

Hi I'm new to the boating world and own a aliminium runabout with 1972 Evinrude 25 engine. After reading this forum and taking my family to the coast for Christmas with an untried engine I thought it would make practical sense to change the water pump impeller. The job was relatively easy except I found a broken bolt between the main and extention housing (head held in by loctite) Grrr. Hit the water and engine ran beautifully but at end of session there was a noticable residue of oil (black) on transom below water level. There is also a degree of oily "sludge" coming out a small hole on the lower leg when the boat is left sit. Gearbox oil is clean with no water. There was half a tank of existing fuel in the tank which I topped up and added good oil at 50:1. The economy on this thing shocked me as well with an hours running using a good 9 litres of fuel (mainly at below planing speed) The engine has a rich / lean low speed control, maybe this isn't adjusted properly?

What gives?? Have I somehow screwed up the impeller change or is there another explanation? Of course I don't know if the engine did this before the work because I didn't have it on the water (2 hours drive)

Thanks in advance

Glenn

Canberra Australia

Glenn, my Aussie friend, don't worry about the black oily stuff, that's just carbon and unburnt oil/fuel mix. You probably won't have to adjust the low speed needle unless the motor's having issues at idle speed.

Welcome to iboats!

Wow!! You guys are fast.. Gotta love American service! Thanks for the help. I neglected to mention that a signifigant part of the leg below the exhaust / water reliefs (two holes) was also black but cleaned off with petrol. Maybe the existing tank of fuel was mixed with way too much oil? I'm going to try a total tank of fresh fuel next time.

Not necessarily, Glenn. I can probably go out to my boat right now and there will be black coating on the skeg of gearcase. It's like soot from a chimney. It's actually good to see it coming out, cause that stuff over time will foul plugs, and cause the piston rings to stick. If you can find it, get a can of Seafoam, or Engine Tuner from boat dealers. Follow directions. There's also a good decarb topic in the FAQ's section.
