oil on water

i have an old johnson 35hp. i had it running in a tank of water and after a while i noticed a film of oil on the water. what could this be from?

Howdy, ranger. Some oil is normal for that situation. It is simply unburned oil (and some gas) that came out in the exhaust. Two strokes were very fuel inefficient until recently, and many still are.<br /><br />Cheers.<br />JB
