I have an external oil leak towards the front of my AQ130c put cannot pin point the source, I have cleaned the motor but there is no clear sign of where it is coming from. So I have decided to replace the following:
Timing Cover Gasket
Camshaft Felt Ring
Fuel Pump Gaskets
Valve Cover Gasket
Oil Trap Gasket
Oil Cap Gasket
Raw Water Pump O-ring
and the Oil Pan gasket.

My first question is can the oil pan gasket be replaced without removing the engine from the boat. There is approx 4" between the oil pan and the bottom of the boat, it this enough room?

and secondly, where else could an oil leak be coming from?

and lastly, is there any type of dye that can be added to the oil to help trace the oil leak?

Thanks for your time.

Seems to me you should be able to find, and/or eliminate some of the seals you listed. Clean the engine follow the oil to the highest point of the leak.

I doubt you can do the pan gasket without removing the engine, but who knows...

Let us know what you find.

Can the timing cover gasket be changed successfully without changing the oil pan gasket?

You can call around to automotive repair shops and ask about the dye. Many of them sell the service so I imagine the fluorescent dye is available. I had the pan off of my 130D but don't remember if the front pan bolts go into the timing cover. I do remember that the rear pan bolts are a different size and also go into the rear seal housing. Mine was on an engine stand so obviously a little easier than in the boat. Sorry if not more help on that.

I definately agree with captmello about finding the leak before going the wholesale replacement route. There's not much sense in "fixing it till it's broke".

I am not sure if this is related or not, but I get alot a smoke when I remove the dipstick while engine is running, I have never seen this on other engines I have owned.....

Wouldn't hurt to do a compression test. It's possible that the rings are pretty bad and causing increased crankcase pressure and subsequent leaks.

Make sure the breather vacuum line is hooked up to a carbureator and the tube and breather connections are clear. The breather assembly should be removing the oil vapor unless there is too much blowby and it can't keep up.

the breather pipe also blows alot a smoke/gas from the crank area. I think an engine pull is in my near futher. :(

I unsure yet of the cost of overhauling the AQ130c and wondering if it worth it.

I am also looking at what other motor will match up to the 270. The AQ151 or the AQ171 are on my wanted list. (if I can get them at a good price)

Thanks for your input

From what I understand, the AQ series 4 cylinder engines share the same bellhousing and primary shaft. Exhaust pipe is slanted forward so you'll need a different one of those and the wiring will be different. The accessories will all be different so you're still dealing with components that are 20+ years out of production.

There are still places to get the bearings, pistons, rings, and gaskets for a rebuild of the B20 if you want to go that route. Oversize rings and bearings are also available. Not sure about valves since the stems are slightly longer and the springs are a bit stiffer on the marine versions. Keep your fingers crossed on the cam/crank gears since those are metal and a new set will cost you a pretty penny.

Whichever route you take, it'll be a challenge but nothing is impossible.

In the meantime, do compression and leakdown tests to determine if and where you actually have a problem that warrents a rebuild or transplant.
