hello crew. I am replacing the oil pan gasket on a 2000 305. I have had a very small leak right under the balancer since I brought her home 3 years ago. i just dealt with it after trips out buy cleaning out the bilge with some rags because I was too scared to pull the engine out of the boat. But I am glad to say that I was able to drop the pan into the bilge without much of a problem.

Before I put this new gasket on, do i need to add any silicone or anything to the gasket or just put it in place. If helping seal up the front and rear, it seems like doing this wouldnt hurt. Also, please note the link, my motor doesnt have the two reinforcements (part number 15 and 16). Do you think I need to buy these prior to installation? Any idea where I can find the torque specs as well?

Thanks in advance for the help!

You are so lucky that your gasket is a one-piece unit. There are 4 pieces to the gasket on my engine (454).

Anyway . . . that is going to be a neat trick to install with the engine still in the boat. You may not be able to see if it is seating properly around the main bearings. You might want to use a bit of permatex to hold it to the pan so it does not slide around on you.

I couldn't imagine trying to do that job with the engine still in the boat. You would probably end up making the leak worse after all that trouble (If you could actually do the job).
You do realize the oil pump pick up sticks down into the pan. How are you going to get the gasket around it? In single engine boats, there is no room to completely remove the pan, you could only lower it some.
Everything would be oily, no way to keep trash out of the pan, no way to tell if any trash fell in the pan, can't clean parts or see if the old sealant is off or not.

Might want to look at the blue words in my signature.

well, the boat is on a rotisserie so i plan to just flip it upside down. haha.

seriously, there should be enough room to slip it past the pick up. Oh Don....i know you are right but man o man this is so much work.

So, do I need those reinforcements? and should I apply some silicone at the ends?

Thanks

yes, that is why i decided to try to just drop the pan and attempt it anyway. can't hurt to try as long as I am careful..... thanks for the tip. i guess I need to pull this puppy. But it will just have to wait as my son and i are smack in the middle of rebuilding a 302 for his 73 mustang. I am just getting antsy because i just got a slip at the marina. Guess i need to do it right the first time.

Those reinforcements are there for keeping the pan torqued evenly all the around. You sure they aren't stuck to the pan?

Ayuh,... Many, many times those reinforcement strips are spot-welded to the pan rails...

Man ru going to have fun! Having attempted the same feat (and failed!) as I could not even drop the pan as bilge pump was in the way-glad there were no nuns passing by that day! How ru going to get the new oil pan gasket under the oil filter pickup without getting it covered in crap?? The service manual if I recall recommends trimming the tiny end pieces off the half circle front seal and putting some gasket sealer at the ends where it lays flat.

for torque specs. look at the oem service manual. ya can read it here. looks like #24 is what ya need to look at.

fwiw. i did the same job a year or two ago. i kinda sorta pulled the engine to do the deed. kinda sorta means i had the engine free and hanging on a hoist. i just didn't remove the engine from the boat. but the pan was removable and the engine high enough to see and clean the block. + put the silicon in the proper places after cleaned.

Thank you my fine boating friends! Better keep the engine hoist a while longer.
