Re: Oil Pan Replacement

quite a bit of those pans are stock truck pans. can be a lot cheaper from a wrecking yard sometimes. last one I bought from merc was around 300 dollars. local wrecking yard gets about 35. they made both a 5 qt pan and a 6 qt pan. difference is in the pan depth

Re: Oil Pan Replacement

cant tell ya that
other than measure your old one and compare it to the replacement one, its either that or just go plunk the bucks down for a factory one.
most used one from an equivalent year truck not all. some of the MIE motors used a merc pan. its just a thought.
if its the standard stamped steel pan its a repackaged GM part number. nothing special marine about it.measure the distance from the pan rail to the sump bottom and the length and width of the sump. remember there are 2 different pan seals for the pre 85 motors with 2 piece oil seals and the one piece oil seal pan is different than both 2 piece oil seal pans.
thats why most times its just easier to call merc and pay the bucks.

Re: Oil Pan Replacement

Tony, I just replaced the oil pan on my '88 4.3LX. I bought a chrome one from a speedshop for $39, only one I could get other than from Mercruiser ($179). It was 1/2" shallower than the OEM pan, which caused a bit of trouble for me, but I did get it to work.

Check the condition of your timing cover when you do the pan. It may be rusty also. If you need to change it, clean the rust off the sealing surface on the harmonic balancer, if it needs it, or it will leak oil.

The gasket for the pan ($45) was available at a local Auto Parts store, as was the timing cover and gasket set (another $45).

Re: Oil Pan Replacement

Tony, The inside of the aftermarket pan is identical to the OEM, in terms of width and baffle. The Aftermarket pan only differed by that 1/2" in depth.

Re: Oil Pan Replacement

This is the 1 I found,+ Thought I sent to you.........

The 1 you picked out is probably the Same Pan.....

Those heads are the 1st good looking set I found,..... I'd call or email the guy,.... They could be a set of Top Pro-Lines,...or is it Pro Top-Lines,.... Anyway,.. Some Offshore Castings,.. I've heard Good things about them......
The 902,+ 062 are Chevy #s,....
Eldebrock makes the Etec Fast-Burn heads too.....

You're not trying to build a Hot Rod Racer,... The 902s would do as well in Our case as the 062s.......
After helping You find this info,... I've found the Reason the 902s get a Bad Rap is a Slightly Larger Exhaust Valve Seat,.......
I guess it hinders the Flow,....... Slightly.......'Course,.. That means it'll take the Heat Better.......
It's a Truck Head,........ I've always thought that Truck parts make the Best,.. Boat Parts....................... :D

Re: Oil Pan Replacement

Got the "new" pan today......looks great.

Hoping to pull the engine tomorrow and replace the pan and rear seal.......

According to the manual the rear seal can be replaced w/o removing the pan.......sounds like an easy job!

Anything else I should do while it's out?
