Oil Pressure alarm

My Regal 18ft v6 mecruiser never had an alarm warning system when I purchased it, so I had my mechanic install one for me.

I was wondering how they work as I am not sure if mine is working the way I have heard the same way as others do,

I turn on the ignition and the alarm comes on, I start the engine and the alarm goes off. After I have been running around a while and the engine has heated up, the oil pressure drops to about 25psi at idle, when I switch off the engine (to pick up a skier or something) and then I start it up again, the alarm stays on until I take off and the engine hits 40psi (it is very annoying).

Is this a faulty alarm or can you get different warning alarms?

I have heard other alarms turn off as soon as the ignition is turned on and then goes off before even starting.

(the engine is a rebulit engine only 12 hours)

Any ideas would be greatful

Ayuh,... We don't know the Whats, or Hows your Mechanic used, so it's abit tough to Guess at whether there's a problem or Not...

Why not call the guy that built it,..??

Long story but lets just say I sued him for bad workmanship, (and won)

Well there are different alarms. Some connect to tachs for engine rpm and sound at different psi readings when at certain Rpms. Some just get power from ignition and sound when the oil pressure sender charge is below a certain level. Different engine oil pressure senders can send different charges depending on how the gauges are meant to read. It's best if not using oem stuff to make sure your warning light, oil pressure gauge and sender are using the same variables.

Your other option could be to disable the alarm you have. Install a kit like this http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=11377. Screw the senders in and be done

I spliced in an ON/OFF rocker switch so I can disable it when needed, such as loading the kids on the towables.

Jeepnsam, please turn off the engine when folks are going in & out of the boat. Sorry to be a worry wart. Safety first.

I do turn the engine off BEFORE bodies get into the water. And I only turn it on when my spotter says I can. (when it's all clear) Not when I believe that all is clear.

That's why I spliced in the ON/OFF switch. During the many on and offs of the engine, the alarm gets really annoying.

However, under normal operation, I leave it turned ON because you never know what can happen. Also, the alarm is a "tell tale" and let's me know oil pressure is good when the 5.0 is hummin.

Thanks for the link! I need to add one...ok, two, to my boat as the original owner removed them.
