hello -i have a 1989 29 ft formula pc -twin 350 merc I/O's- the oil pressur is perfect at 40 on the starboard engine but the oil pressur was at 55-60 on port side - will check oil tomorrow when cold but just thought I would check in and ask if pressure is high does that usually mean oil is low or too much oil?

Thanks

Re: oil pressure

Listen to bondo on this.

BTW, all oil pumps have an integral pressure relief valve..some pumps will NEVEr go over 40 #'s. The rule of thumb..10#'s per thousand rpms.

Yes.....and is also dependent on how accurate the gage is.....(they're generally not very accurate)

Re: oil pressure

Thanks for info-checked oil anyway and its low -need to fill here is the stupid question each engine has two fill caps one on each valve cover does it matter which one i fill from and why would there be two per engine?

Thanks

Re: oil pressure

Ayuh,... I guess Merc got a deal on righthanded valve covers that year,.....
They both go to the same place, use the easiest 1 to get to....

Re: oil pressure

Thicker oils will increase oil pressure. Low oil will increase pressure. Cold oil will also give high oil pressure . Its when oil pressure is low its bad meaning worn bearings, crank, too much clearance in oil pump(worn out), etc. Too much pressure will blow seals and itll leak a bit. Normal pressure for any engine varies from 30 to 80 psi.

Re: oil pressure

Too much oil pressure uses power and wears the distributor drive, especially on roller lifter cams.

15#'s of oil pressure will support a column of oil 32 feet high. Think that's enough to get to the valve train in the valve cover??
