Oil price differential, Wow!

After reading some of the opinions on the value of using OEM packaged oil vs. generics, I stopped at Wally World today.
Now I am not a fan of Wal*Mart, and I tend to look at most things in their stores with some reservations.
So, will someone please tell me I am not a fool for paying $19.10 for a gallon of Evinrude/Johnson 2 cycle oil when Wal*Mart has a Comparable(?) product for $5.94. Paying more is one thing, but over 3 times as much seems like a lot.
One thing that helps keep it in perspective is the fact that 1 or 2 gallons will probably see me through a season. $13 to $26 extra is not that much money per year. Look at percentages, though and a 300% premium should certainly get a premium product.
Both mechanics in the shop I go to use Evinrude/Johnson oil and that makes me think it might be money well spent.

Charles :)

Wally World's 'SuperTech' oil is great stuff. I would have no reservations about using it in anything. It's worked well for years in my heavily used Yammy 90, as well as all the other eggbeaters I play with. SuperTech jugs also can be seen on a lot of charter and pleasure boats in my area. It werks! :)

Fouled Plug:
No!,No!, No! You don't understand. You are supposed to tell me how smart I was to buy the E/J oil. That would make me feel wise and intelligent. Your response makes me feel like a dunce. Hey, maybe next year. :p

Charles

Charlie, there are plenty of people that will say you made the right choice. I've been riding the fence on the issue, no Merc oil or Wally oil, I compromized and have been running Exxon TCWIII for the past 5 years (somewhere in the middle price wise). My local supplier recently stopped carrying Exxon, so I had a decision to make... I burn 2 gallons of TCWIII a fishing trip, I run a pair of gas hungry mercs and fish 30-60 miles off shore about every other weekend this time of the year, weather/wife permitting of course. I just bought 8 gallons of Wally's oil (supertech) and put em in the boat barn (made by Shell/pennsoil). If It doesn't work, I'll scream so loud that everyone on the board will hear it and we'll put an end to this debate. Now I decarb every spring, and peak in the cylinders and I can still see the hatch marks on the tops of the cylinders so it doesn't appear to me the Exxon oil is too bad (carbon build up). You know Exxon, Shell, Pennsoil refine oil, I don't think Merc or Rude do... but that's just my 2 cents.

Charlie, you can always go to Kmart and get their Pennzoil for $6.99/gallon. At least that way you're helping out a bankrupt company(which Walmart is not)

Re: Oil price differential, Wow!

I have read few discussions about what to use as 2 stroke oil. I just ordered a new Glastron 2004, with a 90 hp Yamaha 2 stroke,(I don't have it yet), after i had an I/o for 2 yrs. Of course i want to take care of this new baby, and i keep reading conflicting ideas about tcw-3 certified and Walmart brand which I am sure is tcw-3 certified as well. I checked the price at a local Marina for a 1qt of Yamalube, it was $6.00/qt. Insane. I know i have a warranty on this new motor, the more i read the more i can't make a decision, i don't want to be cheap and shorten the life of my new motor either. Any suggestions.?Thank you

I like roscoe's reply....If it says TC-W3, I don't think you will be "neglecting" your engine.
TC-W3 is the standards that are set by NMMA, that the oil must meet to be called TC-W3.

Middleground, the "XD" J/E formula contains partial synthetics, but not enough to call it "semi-synthetic"....This is MY choice, as well. 30-40.00 more a year, but whats that ave. per trip.....notta!!!! :D
