Oil pump question

86 140HP Mercruiser 3.0L....

Hasn't been started in a while and I plan to spint the pump with a drill (I have a tool used on Chevy engines) but wanted advice first (assuming the drive shaft is the same as the Chevy configuration).

Is it indeed shaft driven?
Do the shafts seat pretty well?

I don't want a relatively simple task to turn into a big job if the shaft pops out or any number of things that I may not anticipate.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Oil pump question

Ayuh,...

The I4s use a different Dist. Body,... Your Tool won't work.....

Just do a full,+ Complete Tune-up on it,...
While you have the sparkplugs out of it,... Spin it over on the Starter a few times....
It'll do the Same thing....

Re: Oil pump question

I fired it a couple times with the valve cover off and it squirted 1 squirt out of a couple rods but not enough. The engine / push rods / rockers are all incredibly clean.

Can I prime the pump in any way?
Put oil down the push rods?

Re: Oil pump question

If it squirted oil up a couple of push rods the pump is already primed. As was suggested, a couple of spins on the starter with the plugs out will get the rest of the engine lubed just fine.
